The Rusty Pygmy Angelfish (Centropyge ferrugata), also known simply as the Rusty Angelfish or Ferrugata Angelfish, is a hardy and attractive dwarf angelfish highly valued in the marine aquarium hobby. This species is named for its primary coloration: a deep rusty-orange or amber body color accented with numerous irregularly shaped black spots that decrease in size toward the ventral area.

Its striking appearance is completed by brilliant sapphire-blue margins on both the dorsal and anal fins. As a small member of the Pomacanthidae family, the Rusty Angelfish typically reaches a maximum size of only 4 inches (10 cm), making it suitable for smaller marine systems.

Native to the Western Pacific (from Japan to the Philippines), this fish is a continuous grazer that requires a mature system with ample live rock for hiding, grazing on microalgae, and establishing territory.

Diet & Compatibility:

• Diet: The Rusty Angelfish is an Omnivore. Its diet must be balanced between meaty foods and vegetable matter. It should be offered a varied diet consisting of marine algae (like Spirulina), high-quality angelfish preparations, and meaty frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped krill. Frequent feeding (2-3 times per day) is essential to minimize the likelihood of it nipping at corals.
• Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 50–70 gallons is recommended to provide sufficient live rock for grazing and enough space to establish a territory, reducing aggression.
• Reef Compatibility: It is rated Reef Safe With Caution. Like many dwarf angels, this species is prone to occasionally nip at the mantles of Tridacna clams and the polyps of certain corals, particularly stony corals (LPS/SPS) and soft corals. It is best suited for a fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) tank or a mixed reef where the hobbyist is prepared for potential nipping.
• Temperament: It is Semi-Aggressive / Territorial. While peaceful toward larger, dissimilar-looking fish, it is highly territorial toward other dwarf angelfish species, especially those with similar coloration (e.g., Coral Beauties or Potter's Angels). It must be kept as the sole Centropyge angelfish unless housed in a very large aquarium (350+ gallons) with different species introduced simultaneously. It is best kept singly.
• Social Behavior: This is a hermaphroditic species, capable of changing sex from female to male. A single fish is recommended, but pairs or harems can be kept in a large system if introduced at the same time.
